“Wu’s conducting of the Orchestra of English National Opera is exemplary” - OPERA ONLINE

Hong Kong-born conductor Peggy Wu is a current Jette Parker Artist at the Royal Ballet and Opera. In the 24/25 season, she made her RBO debut conducting Telemann's Pimpinone at the Linbury Theatre with the Orchestra of ENO, and her main stage debut conducting scenes from Luisa Miller and Il barbiere di Siviglia with the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House. She recently made her debut with Scottish Ensemble, conducting the UK premiere of Raven Chacon’s Voiceless Mass at the Edinburgh Arts Festival. In the 25/26 season, she conducts a Triple Bill at the Linbury Theatre, featuring operas by Elizabeth Maconchy, Charlotte Bray and Elena Langer.

At the Royal Opera, Peggy has served as assistant conductor on Trouble in Tahiti / A Quiet Place, Die Zauberflöte, Pierrot Lunaire and the Double Bill Larmes de Couteau / Full Moon in March. She also worked as off-stage conductor on Tosca and La Traviata, and as répétiteur on Tosca, La Traviata, Semele, La Bohème and Il Trovatore.

Peggy's appointment at the Royal Opera follows the completion of her Master of Music in Conducting at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in 2024, where she studied with Martyn Brabbins. As part of her time at RCS, she worked with orchestras including the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, and the Orchestra of Scottish Opera. Further significant conducting opportunities have included working with the London Sinfonietta, Berlin Sinfonietta, and the Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra.

Peggy was also selected to participate in the prestigious Royal Philharmonic Society Women Conductors Programme, where she regularly works with the Royal Northern Sinfonia at the Glasshouse International Centre for Music. She was also a semi-finalist in the International Conducting Competition Rotterdam.

Peggy participated in a dramaturgy residency at Snape Maltings as a Britten Pears Young Artist. This residency focused on Bushra El-Turk's opera Woman At Point Zero in collaboration with the Royal Opera House, Ensemble ZAR, and conductor Kanako Abe. In the 2022-23 season, she also assisted Sian Edwards on the world premiere of Lliam Patterson's Catriona and the Dragon at the Lammermuir Festival, as well as assisting on the British Youth Opera production of Vaughan-Williams’ Pilgrim's Progress and the RCS Opera double-bill of Menotti's The Medium and Jake Heggie's Three Decembers.

From 2019 to 2022, Peggy held the position of Principal Conductor of the St. Bartholomew’s Chamber Orchestra. A notable achievement during her tenure was leading the orchestra's first foray into opera, producing and conducting a successful semi-staged production of Mozart's Così Fan Tutte, which was entirely funded through a crowdfunding campaign.

As a pianist, Peggy graduated from the Royal College of Music, studying piano with Norma Fisher. She is also mentored by pianists Maria João Pires and Dang Thai Son. Her prizes as a pianist include second and audience prize at the Birmingham International Piano Competition and second prize (first prize not awarded) at the Windsor International Piano Competition. She was also a finalist at the New York International Piano Competition and a semi-finalist at the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition. As a soloist, she has appeared with the Silesian Philharmonic Orchestra and the Hong Kong ESF Orchestra, and has given recitals at many music festivals, such as the International Holland Music Sessions, ISA Music Festival (Austria), and Bowdoin International Music Festival (USA). She held a Young Artist residency at the PianoTexas International Academy and Festival in 2016.
